Fiction ...

… and the fine art of bonsai

What is it with those tiny trees? Why on earth is Tom so obsessed with them? And why, when Rachel and Mitch go looking for Tom at his house, is there only one bonsai tree left? What’s happened to the rest of them?

And let’s face it, Rachel is useless with house plants! This tree doesn’t stand a chance with her.

If you’d like to know more about the wonderful world of bonsai, please click here. And in the meantime, if anyone has any tips on the care of house plants, I – sorry, Rachel - would be very grateful!

All I know is, bonsai trees are a bugger to keep alive for some reason. I bought my mum one last year - she's wanted one for ages - and it didn't last a month. So, in other words, I'm no help whatsoever!

Rachel sounds like me. Every plant in my house (and every house I have lived in) dies. Because I over water, because I forget to water, because the light is wrong, because, because, because...

House plant killer here too I'm afraid. Herbs are as far as I go in 'indoor greenery'.

But where have all his bonsai gone? Intruiging!

I too kill everything. I just forget to water plants properly.

I think a rogue Venus Fly Trap ate them!

Oh dear, there seems to be a theme building here - writers and houseplants, not a great mix.

Tom, if he has any sense, has given the rest of the bonsais away so he can only be held responsible for killing one and not the whole collection.

I would love to help but have just killed a bougainvilla. Not on purpose, of course.

Karen - yes, I've managed to kill two of the little blighters! One apparently died because I moved it into a different room!

Pacha - I have a plant withering in front of me right now. I know I should get rid of it but I hate to admit defeat!

Lane - all will be revealed, eventually!

Annieye - ooh a rogue Venus fly trap - good plot twist!

Maddie - sadly Tom doesn't have a lot of sense ... but, even so, you may be right!

Debs - oh dear, they're quite big aren't they?!

Watering them is usually a good start, and I find not keeping them in cupboards stops them going all yellow. Other than that, not much idea, really.

The only thing I ever have any success with indoors is a Busy Lizzie, given to me years ago, and her successive offspring ... I take cuttings and throw them into a glass of water for a few weeks, pot them up for a while and then plant them in the garden (though they don't survive winter outside.)

They're incredible, I grow so many I sometimes have to bribe people to take them off my hands!

The ironic thing is that my Mum, who has amazingly green fingers, has so far managed to kill every Busy Lizzie I've given her. The universe balancing itself out or something ...
