Books, books ...

... and more books ...

We decided to have a lazy self-indulgent day today.

First of all we went to our local Waterstones. I needed to do some research. And while we were there, we might have moved some books around a bit so that 'In Search of Adam' by Caroline Smailes was displayed to slightly better advantage than it might otherwise have been.

Then we drove out to a second hand and new bookshop in a nearby small town. Regular readers of this blog will know that I already have a scary TBR pile, but as so many of you confessed to having much bigger ones, I decided that it was fine for me to buy more. I'm particularly grateful to Debs who confessed to 81 books in her TBR pile!

So, taking this as a green light, I bought:

two collections of short stories - 'Bread and Chocolate' by Philippa Gregory
and, 'Not The End Of The World' by Kate Atkinson

'The Airman and The Carpenter' by Ludovic Kennedy another of his 'miscarriage of justice' books. I love them.

And finally, a find to be cherished. A small photocopied, self produced booklet entitled 'Helen's Story', which is the life story of Helen Attewell. More on this when I've read it and seen if I can find out anything more about her.

I have another book review on bookersatz. This time it is of 'The Unnumbered' by Sam North. Do have a look at bookersatz if you haven't already, there's some really interesting stuff on there.

isn't it secretly a little fun having a long TBR list, knowing that there's no way in hell you'll every be bored and as often as not open for surprises ;-)

for my part, i have a long list of favourite books i need to reread and deepen insight into... i've done that for years and often feel as though i've been visiting old friends for a while...

don't worry too much about being self-indulgent, you may as well do it yourself because nobody else will do it for you :P

keep well...

What a lovely day and nothing self indugent about it at all!

A local shop was closing down the other day. The books were 10p each. Oh dear. I had to stagger back to the car with my booty. The TBR piles are now everywhere.

Enjoy your stash Helen:-)

Ah Helen,

I am jealous! I want to spend the day buying piles of lovely books. I agree with Bart, there's soemthing very exciting about thinking you might have an undiscovered beauty in the pile!

Enjoy your read :)

Bart - yes it is fun - although they are in danger of taking over the house!

Lane - it was a lovely day - we even had lunch at an American Diner as well!

Kerry - all I have to do now is decide where to start!

Sounds like a perfect day!

I am especially pleased to hear that you moved ISoA around.
I had been told that all of the copies had been recalled :( (Because of the buy out).

So you've made me happy to think that some stores have chosen to keep me in, even though that means that they can't return the books.

x

Caroline - I didn't know about the recall. Our local Waterstones had about four copies - now very prominently displayed - so hope that helps xxx

I love Kate Atkinson's weird stories. Brilliant - I think it's time to re-read them.

You can never have too many books, Helen.

(Actually, you probably can, but that's my mantra anyway!)

Sounds heavenly. I love having so many books to look forward to (no idea when or if I will ever get through them as the piles keep growing). S, or was it J asked the other day, "Mum why do you keep buying books when you have so many already?"

What a question?

Glad you had such a lovely weekend.

Aliqot - I too love Kate Atkinson. I've recently read her two most recent novels, so I thought I'd treat myself to the short stories!

Karen - I think maybe when your house is on the brink of exploding you may have too many books. Until then, let's not worry about it!

Debs - to be honest unless you don't buy any more books in the foreseeable future I can't see you getting through yours! But there is something nice about an ever-changing pool to choose from!
