... Pile
I am looking at my TBR pile. At the moment it stands at thirteen books!
(I’m not even including writing guides, reference type books and anthologies.)
Of those:
Three have been started and not finished. One of my worst reading habits is to start reading something, get distracted and put it down somewhere and forget about it.
Two belong to other people and are on loan. Sorry K. Sorry R.
Four were gifts, two at my request from the lovely Welshman, and two that I probably wouldn’t have thought of reading if they hadn’t been kindly given to me. Thanks M.
Two were picked up at a book stall and cost about 50 pence each. Easy to go mad when books are that cheap!
The rest I paid good money for in bookshops, in some cases a considerable time ago. Why is it that I can’t walk into a bookshop without buying, not just one book, but a pile of books?
So given how huge my TBR pile is, what do you think I did yesterday afternoon? Well, obviously, I went out and bought a new book.
Fellow bloggers, please help me!
How big is your TBR pile?
How long do you think it will take you to get through it?
How small should my TBR pile be before I allow myself to go out and buy more books?
And while we’re on the subject of books, have a look at bookersatz the new book review blog. I’ve reviewed ‘One Good Turn’ by Kate Atkinson which I briefly mentioned on this site a while ago.

Good review Helen. I've still got that one to read.
My TBR pile is enormous. My local library sells off books all the time. 20p each. I mean how can you resist that.
Oh by the way, talking of libraries, the lady there told me Kate Atkinson is doing a tour of East Anglia soon. I shall keep ears open in case she's coming your way.
Great review! I have 16 books in my TBR pile. They keep taunting me, but I know I will get through them eventuallY!
My TBR pile keeps falling over to reveal overdue library books and lost notebooks (hurrah). It currently stands at 12, including one book that I should be reading for my book club next week but which I keep putting back to the bottom, a 'Secret Unicorn' book which has snook in from my daughters TBR (currently 21 mainly Enid Blyton 'Mystery series') and and Kate Atkinson's 'Not the End of the World' short story collection which I am looking forward to enormously (liked your KA-OGT review v. much
Lane - please don't let me anywhere near a place that sells books for 20p! My house will explode. Let me know if you hear any more about the Kate Atkinson thing. If it's somewhere we can both get to, maybe it could be a meet-up opportunity as well x
Yvonne - yey! Your pile is bigger than mine!
Sarah - that opens up a whole new discussion about how you decide which one to read next!
My pile got so big it flowed onto shelves. So now there are usually 2-3 on my bedside table, and a shelf behind which presently has 14 -- some I'm in the middle of, more and more (I'm happy to say) written by people I know and they each have to make it to the top of the pile! It's hopeless. I'll go check out bookersatz now.
Only three being read at once. And only two picked up at the 50p stall. What's the matter with you woman? Can you still get your doors open? Can you still see out of the windows? Can you see the carpet?
Then you don't have enough books yet.
My name is Debs and I am a book-buying addict. I have 81 (don't say it, I know) books in my tbr piles... I am duly ashamed of myself.
How long is a piece of string?! I've got a teetering pile by the bed, but still can't resist borrowing/buying more books. I read very quickly, so it won't take long to get through them, but the pile keeps growing!
Great review, by the way - I love Kate Atkinson :o)
Sue - how lovely to be reading books by people you know!
Leigh - I know, I know. But at the moment I just shouldn't be spending money on books. Not while we need food, cat biscuits etc
Debs - I am in awe!
Karen - so, however quickly you read, it will never be gone!
I thought I had commented but I must have been distracted by the link to your review! (which was brilliant btw! I have to read that book...I love Atkinson and it's really the only book by her I haven't read so...I have to read that book and thats that!)
I am terrible about books so I will be completely useless to you on this one (as if I could be anything but useless on anything anyway). I NEED to buy books. If I am have 10 euro to my name and my kids don't have shoes I will spend that money on a book... I have a bookshelf at home full of my TBR books...but does that stop me going to libraries and checking out more books or BUYING new books if I ever get near a bookstore....Of course not. Bookoholic, thats me. And I love that the TBR pile is impossible to tackle. That soothes me for some reason...
Oh my! I don't like to calculate ... but well, just don't tell Gary! I think I have a book collecting problem :)
How big is your TBR pile?
17 books and I bought 3 more this week! Most were bought for me for Christmas/my brthday. People tend to buy me books or pens. But I also have 10 books waiting for reviews (not included in the above 17!).
How long do you think it will take you to get through it?
Well over a year for my chosen books, but then I have review books to look at too!
How small should my TBR pile be before I allow myself to go out and buy more books?
I think that a TBR selection should be topped up. How awful would it be if you had no books left to read!!!!!? So awful! dreadful! It would be a crime, almost.
x
ps. Debs has 81! We should all bow at her feet. Now I feel that I can buy lots more :)
x
Pacha - You're right - if the tbr pile is too big to tackle, then there really isn't any point worrying about it! And why would children need shoes anyway!
Caroline - thanks for making me feel better. I wish people would buy me more pens - although I do have a Hello Kitty pencil. Did I mention that? :) And, yes, Debs is my new role model!
my tbr books cover a table (not a night table, a grandparents antique small dining table that's in the corner of my bedroom)next to the bed, are stacked below it and a few have even escaped under the bed. I have tried to stay away from places like half price books, barnes and noble etc. but i still manage to bring home the odd book (i bought four at the dollar tree store just the other day)and i went to the library and brought home four more (sigh) its an addiction for me.

Haha! Three piles on the kitchen table, one on my bedside table, all three library tickets full (10 books allowed on each ticket), three piles of magazines, one 2ft pile of cuttings that caught my eye but I haven't read properly ...
And then there's my TDO (To Do Otherwise), and TBW (To Be Written) piles too ... I think I need to lie down!
:o)
tryingtowrite - welcome to my blog. That really is a huge tbr pile! thankyou for making me feel better about mine!
moondreamer - yes the piles of mags are a problem too! And I don't think my to be written list will ever go down!
