Very Sad News

Unfortunately I've had to have Smudge put to sleep this evening. Although he's been doing really well until now, his bad eye had started to go septic, and for the first time he's started to refuse food. The vet came round and we agreed that it was time to let him go.

I've posted this photo of him which was taken a few years ago because this is how I want to remember him. Looking young and beautiful

Rest In Peace Little Smudgelet

Thanks to all my blog readers for your support, and especially to Pat for her last email which helped a lot.

God bless you and Smudge, Helen. It feels as though he was a part of this blogging family so I know we'll all miss him too. He'll be with my Mini now, and they'll be swapping gossip about us both. :-)

Smudge was very lucky to have you as his mum. You did the very best for him, and I hope that when the pain subsides, you can take comfort in that.

HUGS, Helen.
I'm sure you know the Rainbow Bridge Poem, but here's a few lines from it:

"All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by."

So, yes, remember him as he was in the lovely photo because that's how he is now.

You knew this was coming.
I knew this was coming. I guess we all did.
Still, I seem to be spilling tears onto my keyboard.
No more pain for little one.
A fab picture and the best way to remember him.

Oh, we're having a great time up here. It's nice to have some company - we can box the mice in (read: work the tin-opener between us) and there is so much lounging about to do. It's heaven.

Oh Helen. It's heartbreaking. After the recent piece of good news, I'd so hoped he'd be with you for a bit longer. What a beautiful cat Smudge was.

Do try to adopt another cat as soon as you can; as you know, I decided I couldn't bear to go through the trauma of loss ever again, but it turned out to be the worst decision I could have made.

Heaps and heaps of hugs and love,
Rosie. xxxxx

Knowing that it's coming doesn't make it any easier when it arrives, does it?

Hugs and commiserations Helen. I lost a dear dog earlier this year and, although you know their time has come and although you know their end is gentle and peaceful, they leave a massive hole that is impossible to fill. Smudge looks such a dear in the photograph - that is how to remember him.

Oh I am so sorry Helen. I know just what it's like to have to lose a cat. My last one was 19 when suddenly her kidneys went. She had one night of agony and that was too long but I do so feel for you. big hugs.

Some worthy writers in history have had the privilege of a feline muse - Hemmingway and TS Eliot but to name two. I have 6 cats (and 2 dogs and a horse) and at times have had up to 11 cats (luckily I live rurally so they dont go hunting down neighbours gardens to get their kicks out of leaving little surprises or overturning perenials etc) and while felines like to think they are fiercely independent, they remain vulnerable when ill health comes along. I also know that felines are very vain, after all they are the most pleasurable being to look upon (Im quoting what my cats would want me to state as a fact) so when their health deteriorates so too does their self esteem. You have been very brave and rewarded Smudge's trust in you to do what is necessary, to repay all that feline love with dignity for him. Thank you for sharing the profile of another wonderful creature.

So sorry to hear your sad news, Helen. Sending lots of cyber (((hugs))) at this sad time.

A lovely pic of Smudge - try to remember him as he was then. Like Pat, I always try to remember the Rainbow Bridge and think of our pets as restored to full health and happiness.

Hi Helen. Sorry for the late entry. I found you at Pat's blog. I just wanted to send my loving wishes to you. In August I lost my wonderful cat, Miss Tiggs. She wasn't even sick. She just got choked on something and couldn't get enough air. She died in my friend's arms. We cried for two days. But I am much better. I have two other frisky cats to keep me on my toes. Hugs to you.

Just wanted to add my condolences, Helen. It's a very brave thing to do, calling an end to things like that. Lovely picture of Smudge. Some Buddhists believe these creatures are souls awaiting enlightenment. Who knows. Hope the pain is less each day.

This is quite an old post of yours and you might not get to read this, but had to write and say how awful for you and how sad you must be. So so sad when beloved animal isnt there anymore.
