Welcome To My Blog

We'll be talking about ... writing, and how it's not as easy as it looks ... reading, and how it would be easier if there were more hours in the day ... my four cats and how cute they are (apart from when they bring disgusting things into the house) ... anything else I think is worth a mention.

Please feel free to join in.

Bad Medicine, Bad Science and Good News

As some of you will know, I've had a rather strange few days. On Friday, I had a 'proper poorly' turn. I won't go into details on a public blog, but suffice it to say that when I typed my symptoms into the NHS Direct website I got flashing red pages saying 'Please call 999 and ask for an ambulance'. I decided this was a bit too drama-queeny even for me, but that a trip to the GP wouldn't be a bad plan. So I rang and booked myself an appointment. For some reason they booked me in as someone else - possibly due to my hysteria and general lack of coherence on the phone. Anyway, eventually the error was sorted out and I had a lovely phone call from the doctor yesterday telling me that I should be pleased I'm wearing so well as the person he'd confused me with was 27, and he hadn't been aware that the person he was treating on Friday wasn't 27. (NB - I am considerably older than 27!) I'm going to see him again on Friday and I'll be able to thank him not only for making me better last week, but for making my week by telling me I can pass for 27.

On to Bad Science. This is the book by Ben Goldacre pictured above. It sounds like a really interesting read. Jane Smith is having a book giveaway on her brilliant blog How Publishing Really Works, so please pop over and have a look and publicise it however you can.

Finally, the good news. My article about my experiences volunteering for the BBC has been accepted by My Weekly magazine. I don't have a publication date yet, but I'll keep you posted.

Oh Helen, how scary. Hope you're feeling better.

But congratulations on passing for 27 (said she enviously - 27 is but a distant dream for me, someone recently thought they were being kind when they said I could easily pass for 39 - NOT AMUSED) and for the article. Will look forward to reading it.

Take care. XX

Glad the bad turn seems to have passed off, Helen. I must say you look very young in your photo. Look forward to reading the MW article.

Gosh, Helen, the medical bit doesn't sound very nice. Hope you're all recovered now.

And well done on another article sale!

Ooh, how lovely to be thought 27. NHS direct is a bit scary isn't it? The phone helpline even more so. My sister in law rang them about a sore, swollen throat and the lady on the other end informed her an ambulance was on the way! Glad the lovely doctor sorted you out.

Glad you're better now. In any case, your writing ability seems in no way impaired; you're positively on fire at the moment.

I'd be asking the doc to marry me, or I would if I wasn't already married! ;)

Great about another publication, you're racking them up now!

Suzanne - it was scary, but being thought to be 27 has made up for it!

Kath - photos can be very misleading!

Sue - I am much better thanks

Bernadette - it wasn't nice at the time.

Carol - I'm thinking I should take ID with me when I try to buy alcohol in the future.

Denise - I thought NHS Direct was meant to preserve the NHS resources. Doesn't seem to be working.

Lane - thanks darling.

Jumbly - he was a very nice doctor

Captain - I am a bit!

Claire - it was rather tempting!

Hope you've booked your 18 - 30 cruise. You'd have no problem qualifying.

How scary but how brave you were to wave off the ambulance and see the doctor instead. Probably best - last time I went to hospital, they tried to give me insulin, confusing me with another Mackenzie who had diabetes. Oh, and the wheel of my wheel chair kept falling off.

That all sounds very frightening for you. Mind you, I wouldn't mind someone mistaking me for a 27 year old (it's never going to happen though).

Congratulations on the acceptance, I can't to read the piece when it comes out.

Hope you're a little more on top of things now Helen, those moments can be pretty dislocating if you're in the wrong mood...

Well poor you. 27 indeed! I wish... If I pass for 57 that'll do. So glad the medico sorted you out and hope there isn't a recurrence. Can't get MW here I'm afraid. Boo.
